Welcome your new class in style this semester using FlipGrid. Andrew Corbett, Chair of the Entrepreneurship Division, explains how he employed this innovative tool in his fully-online summer elective EPS7553: On Becoming Entrepreneurial. One of the best features of the tool is its simplicity. “Often when you bring new tools into a course there can be a steep learning curve and we spend a significant amount of time getting students up to speed on the tool which stresses students out. And, it leaves less time for them to focus on the actual assignment. This was NOT the case with FlipGrid, it was simple for everyone… even me!” Students were immediately engaged using FlipGrid to introduce themselves in a short, 90-second video. At its core, the tool allows classes to build conversation through video. More advanced features include opportunities for students to reply to their peers, and for faculty to add personalized feedback and view student engagement. After being exposed to this tool, Corbett would recommend the use of FlipGrid to all faculty as “a really easy way to connect with students – especially if you are not having any face-to-face sessions.” Want to give FlipGrid a try in your classroom? VoiceThread began in Stage 1 (Concept) in the Innovation Pipeline and quickly moved to Stage 4 (Rollout) thanks to Babson Professor Kimiko Abramoff. Kimiko has been using Voicethread in her Japanese class for projects and assignments. Click here to learn more about VoiceThread. As we embark on the daunting project of evaluating our Learning Management System alongside other competitors in the marketplace, it is important that we take a moment to understand who is who, who the movers are in this space, and what the industry as a whole looks like. Babson has undergone an LMS evaluation and we are currently piloting 3 systems, D2L’s Brightspace, Instructure’s Canvas, and Blackboard’s newest platform, Ultra.
